Talks with Pakistan only to bridge trust deficit: Krishna
May 20th, 2010 - 12:45 am ICT by IANS
New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna Wednesday said the main thrust of his dialogue with Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi would be on exploring ways to eliminate the distrust between the two countries.
“If we can hit common ground, then (the) other substantial issues can be taken up,” he said in an interview with CNN-IBN news channel.
Krishna said Home Minister P. Chidambaram will visit Pakistan ahead of him.
The home minister will “place all the facts so far collected with reference to terrorist activities directed against India from Pakistani soil by Pakistan nationals”, Krishna added.
Krishna is scheduled to go to Islamabad July 15 to hold dialogue with Qureshi.
The talks between the foreign ministers will be preceded by Chidambaram’s visit to Pakistan June 26.
Krishna said that unless there was action against terror by Pakistan, things at the government level may not go very far.
“We would like to make a major breakthrough on terror…unless there is action on terror - perhaps I might go to Islamabad, foreign minister Qureshi might come to Delhi - things at the government level, I am afraid, will remain the same,” Krishna said.
He also said the foreign minister-level talks with Pakistan should not be construed as resumption of composite dialogue as it was only an exercise to bridge the trust deficit between the two countries.
