Taj group to take steps beyond Earth hour
March 25th, 2011 - 9:10 pm ICT by IANSAhmedabad, March 25 (IANS) While taking part in the global Earth Hour event Saturday, hospitality major Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces plans to go beyond it by engaging its staff in creating ideas to conserve and protect resources.
Vasant Ayyappan, director Corporate Sustainability Indian Hotels Company Limited, said Friday: “We propose to turn off all lights for the designated hour in all our hotels and resorts across the world. We hope our little contribution to this noble cause will help build a better tomorrow for future generations.”
“We also propose to go beyond the hour and will engage our staff and employees in creating ideas and bringing in new thought to see how we can conserve and protect resources and the environment,” he added.
According to a company press statement, it will also encourage its guests to participate in this initiative.
The theme for Earth Hour (8.30 to 9.30 p.m.) this year is “Let’s go beyond the hour”.
The Taj will focus on initiatives like encouraging staff to put out the lights in their homes as well, a brainstorming session for staff on how to commit to the cause of deterring climate change, and also proactive engagement with stakeholders to persuade them to commit to the Earth Hour and conservation in general.
India joined the Earth Hour initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2009 with five million Indians across 56 cities supporting the initiative by switching off all non-essential lights and saving approximately 1,000 MW of power in that one hour.
