Tainted Odisha official’s farmhouse is now a farmers’ centre

Bhubaneswar, Dec 14 (IANS) Odisha Wednesday converted the confiscated farmhouse of a tainted official into a nursery and a farmers’ training centre, a statement said.

The 2.6 acres farmhouse, which started working as a training centre from Wednesday at Rangailunda village in Ganjam district, belonged to Ramesh Chandra Behera, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who faced several corruption charges, a statement released by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s office said.

State vigilance department officials raided his houses and properties in the early 1990s when he was serving as an additional secretary in state.

The vigilance department chargesheeted him for illegally accumulating assets worth Rs.4.8 lakh. The current value of the assets runs into crores of rupees.

The local administration took possession of the farmhouse and set up the nursery and the training centre on the basis of a special vigilance court, the statement said.

The state government last month confiscated the Bhubaneswar house of Sanjib Kumar Ray, another former IAS officer, and opened a homeopathic dispensary there.
