Tagore award for Bengali novelist
August 12th, 2011 - 10:53 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) Ramapada Chowdhary, a well-known Bengali novelist, was Friday conferred the Rabindranath Tagore International Prize 2011 for his work “Banpalashir Padabali” at an event here.
The award was instituted by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM).
Chowdhary was chosen for the award for his lifelong contribution to Bengali literature and depiction of the socio-cultural milieu in the post - partition era. He has written over 100 short stories and 50 novels. The award consists of prize money of Rs.1 crore, a gold medal and a citation.
Malay Chaudhuri, founder director of the institute, said he strongly believes in the philosophy of creating people-centric economic environment for sustainable development.
Earlier, a thought-provoking session was held on the topic “Survival of the weakest” which was attended like Lord Meghnad Desai, Professor Emeritus - London School of Economics, Mohan Munasinghe, Vice Chairman-Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder - Sulabh International, Shukla Bose, Founder - Parikrama Humanity and Professor Arindam Chaudhuri, Honorary Director - IIPM Think Tank.
