Swann: Prison sentences to Pak trio a ‘wake-up call’
November 14th, 2011 - 10:24 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Nov 14 (IANS) England spinner Graeme Swann feels the punishment handed out to the three guilty Pakistani players will serve as a “massive wake-up call” for cricket.
The Pakistani trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were found guilty by a Southwark Crown Court on the charges of spot fixing during the Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan last year. They were sentenced to jail terms ranging from six to thirty months.
Amongst fears that the problem of corruption runs deep in to cricket, Swann told the Independent: “This ‘tip of the iceberg’ stuff, I can’t say I agree with it.”
“If it’s as rife as people say then I’d have an inkling, but I don’t know anyone in the England team who’s had a dodgy approach.”
“Even so, I’d like to think that these sentences will act as a massive wake-up call.”
“It might just be a guy buying you a bag of peanuts at the bar and asking whether you’ll bat first if you win the toss. But from now on that should set off alarm bells.”
