Suspected thief lynched in DelhiNovember 13th, 2008 - 9:51 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) A suspected thief died after being allegedly beaten by the public in Delhi Thursday, the police said. However, the victim’s family alleged that he died due to police thrashing. According to a senior police officer: “We received a PCR call at around 5 a.m. Thursday. The locals told us that the victim was allegedly caught stealing at a house in Nihal Vihar area in west Delhi, after which a lot of people from the area gathered and roughed him up.”
Gaurav Singh, aged 19, was a resident of Shiv Ram Park in Nilothi village in west Delhi.
“The boy was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His family has been informed. We have registered a case in this regard and are investigating the matter,” the police officer added.
His family, however, differed from the police’s version and claimed that Singh had gone out with a friend Deepak Wednesday night but did not return for long.
“The family claimed that they waited whole night and even checked at a couple of places where he could have been but was not found,” the police said. The family claimed that their son died due to police thrashing.
The police have refuted the family’s claim and said that Singh died due to injuries suffered at the hands of locals.
Police claimed that there was another boy with Singh, but he managed to escape.
