Suspected Maoists sent to police custody in Bengal
February 1st, 2011 - 8:55 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Feb 1 (IANS) A court in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Tuesday sent two suspected Maoists, arrested from a relief camp housed in a guest house of a Trinamool Congress-run civic body, to police custody for two days, police said.”The two - Asim Mahato and Amiya Mahato - were remanded to police custody for two days after being presented before the Midnapore district court this (Tuesday) afternoon,” said West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma.
“Police demanded seven days police remand for the accused duo, but the court after hearing the allegations levelled against them gave them a two-day remand,” said defence counsel Mrinal Chowdhury.
The two were arrested Monday. According to police, Asim Mahato used to act as a courier for the elusive Maoist top leader Kishenji and Amiya Mahato was a Maoist squad member and accused in several cases.
“We have recovered several letters of senior Maoist leaders from them,” said Verma.
Their arrest from the guest house run by the Trinamool Congress Midnapore municipality triggered chaos Monday after party supporters and occupants of the relief camp prevented the police from carrying out the raids and the arrests. Several journalists were injured, one of them seriously, when police rained canes to disperse the mob.
