Suspected Maoists kill youth in Bengal
February 14th, 2011 - 5:11 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Feb 14 (IANS) Maoists rebels gunned down a man in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district alleging that he was a police informer, police said Monday. “The bullet-riddled body of 27-year old Parimal Hansda was recovered from Raharaguta village close to the Orissa-Bengal border,” West Midnapore Deputy Superintendent of Police Pinaki Ranjan Das said.
Several Maoist posters, some written in Oriya, claiming responsibility for the murder were recovered from the spot.
The posters said that the man was killed for being a police informer, Das told IANS over phone.
According to the victim’s family members, a group of 15 armed cadres attacked Hansda’s house Sunday and dragged him out. He was later shot dead a few metres away from his home.
Maoists involved in the crime might have come from Orissa, said Das.
Police sources said Hansda belonged to a well-to-do family but there were allegations that he had been extorting money from people in the name of Maoists.
The Maoists are active in three western districts of the state - West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura.
