Ranchi, Oct 31 (IANS) Suspected Maoists abducted two local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from Jharkhand’s Latehar district Sunday afternoon, police said.
According to police, three people, including the two BJP leaders, were going to Betla from Barwadih of Latehar district, around 140 km from Ranchi, when suspected Maoists fired gun shots at them at Garu Road.
The BJP leaders - Sushil Upadhaya and Ajit Singh - were abducted but the third person, Amresh Singh, managed to escape. Amresh informed police about the incident.
Police have launched a combing operation to arrest the abductors, whose identity has not yet been established.
“Either Maoist or criminals have abducted the BJP leaders. Some criminals involved in abduction are active on Garu and Betla highway and they might have abducted the BJP leaders,” a police official from Latehar told IANS.
