New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) Boxer Surender Singh (75kg) powered through to the semi-finals with a 21:15 win over Nathan Thorley of Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Mann Saturday.

The 17-year-old carried forward his good form from the recently concluded Cuban Youth Olympics, where he bagged a gold medal.

With the help of some exquisite combinations and nifty footwork, the two times Youth National Champion secured a berth in the round of four. He next faces Grant Quigley of Scotland. With this victory, Surender has assured himself of at least a bronze.

The Indian boxing team is now sure of returning home with at least two bronze medals, with Rahul Poonia also making it to the semi-finals in the light-weight division.

Sumit Sangwan’s campaign, however, came to an abrupt end with a 13:15 loss against England’s Jack Massey in the quarter-finals of the light-heavyweight category.
