Surat rape accused to be tried in fast track court
June 14th, 2009 - 1:34 pm ICT by IANSSurat, June 14 (IANS) A day after an enraged mob attacked three men accused of rape, two of whom are sons of policemen, the Gujarat government ordered Sunday that the men would be tried in a fast track court.
The men, Shahid Saiyad, Tariq Saiyad - both sons of policemen posted in Surat - and Abu Bakr Sheikh, are accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in a moving car June 12 and video filming the act. The three were sent to 14 days’ police remand by a court Saturday.
A home department official said the severest punishment would be recommended for the accused.
The three men were beaten up by people at the Surat civil hospital were they were taken for medical examination Saturday. When patients and other visitors at the hospital learnt about the gang rape they beat the three up severely, police said.
The government has also transferred the Surat police commissioner Deepak Swarup after he allegedly made disparaging remarks about the rape victim.
Surat Additional Director General of Police Shivanand Jha is the new Surat police chief.
Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to meet the girl and her family Sunday afternoon.
