Surat gang rape accused slapped on way to court
June 26th, 2009 - 5:41 pm ICT by IANSSurat, June 26 (IANS) Shahid Saiyad, who has been accused of raping a teenager with two other men here, was slapped by a youth while he was on his way to a local court Friday, police said.
“The youth who slapped Saiyad has been detained and is being questioned,” a police officer with the Surat Crime Branch said.
“It was only one person who slapped one of the accused. There was no mob involved,” the officer added.
The three accused - Saiyad, Tariq Saiyad and Abu Bakar Sheikh - were earlier bashed up by a mob in Surat Civil Hospital June 13. They were thrown to the ground, punched and kicked by the mob as the policemen tried to fend off the attackers.
The three men, two of them sons of policemen, allegedly abducted a 17-year-old girl and raped her in a moving car here June 12. They were also remanded to judicial custody Friday.
