Sunshine gives Uttar Pradesh respite from biting chill

Lucknow, Jan 6 (IANS) A bright and sunny day Tuesday brought much needed respite from the acute cold wave that has been sweeping Uttar Pradesh over the past few days. The sun took the day temperature up in almost all parts of the state where the mercury had dipped to this winter’s lowest at 4 degrees Celsius.

Even though the early morning temperature remained low in Agra (4 degrees), Lucknow (5.2) and Kanpur (5.6), the mercury rose as the day progressed on account of the bright sunshine.

However, the relief from the biting chill may not last very long, weather officials say.

“There is possibility of rain and thunderstorm in certain parts of Uttar Pradesh in the coming couple of days and this might once again create extreme cold conditions,” state meteorological department director J.P. Gupta told IANS.

The improvement in the weather, however, did not have any immediate impact on the train services that were badly disrupted due to the foggy conditions. While as many as 15 trains were cancelled, Monday evening saw a train arriving 42 hours behind schedule.

Close to that was the Saryu-Yamuna Express running between Faizabad and Delhi, which arrived 18 hours late. Even the Swarn Shatabdi, which was delayed by 12 hours Monday, continued to run more than an hour behind schedule Tuesday.

Flights were stated to be mostly on schedule.
