Student leader accused of professor’s murder found dead
November 20th, 2011 - 5:48 pm ICT by IANSBhopal, Nov 20 (IANS) A student leader accused of severely beating a college professor, leading to his death, in 2006 was found dead in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior city, police said Sunday.
Police said Akhil Bhartiya Vidyathi Parisad (ABVP) member Vimal Tomar’s death seemed to be suicide but they could only confirm it after the post-mortem examination.
“He was found dead at his uncle’s house. Prima facie, it seems a suicide, however no suicide note has recovered and post-mortem is yet to be done so nothing concrete could be said about the death and about the reasons behind it,” Gwalior Deputy Superintendent of Police Niraj Pandey told IANS.
Tomar, who was state secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s student wing, had along with a dozen others, brutally beaten up Professor H.S. Sabharwal of Madhav College, Ujjain, Aug 26, 2006 after a spat over elections to the college’s student union. Sabharwal had later succumbed to his internal injuries.
Later after immense pressure from media, Tomar was made prime accused for the professor’s murder.
Along with Tomar, state ABVP chief Shashi Ranjan Akela was also booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Four others were also booked under different sections of the IPC. However all the six were acquitted by a court due to lack of evidence.
After his acquittal, Tomar was living with his uncle in Gwalior’s Gola ka Mandir area.
