May 9th, 2011 - 10:17 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 9 (IANS) A Delhi court Monday sent three Uttarakhand policemen to judicial custody till May 13 after they surrendered before it in the 2009 killing of an MBA student in Dehradun.
The case was shifted to Delhi by the Supreme Court March 17.
Victim Ranbir Singh of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh went to Dehradun looking for a job when a group of policemen shot him dead July 2, 2009 after branding him a robber. The victim was hit by 29 bullets. Eighteen policemen were blamed for the crime.
On Monday, sub-inspectors Nitin Chauhan and Rajendra Bist and constable Ajit Kumar appeared before Special Judge V.K. Maheshwari in response to non-bailable warrants issued against them earlier.
After their surrender the trial court sent them to judicial custody till May 13. Four of their colleagues were earlier sent to judicial custody.
The court May 13 is likely to begin the process of framing of charges against all seven policemen accused of murder.
After the initial probe in Uttarakhand, the seven policemen were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in September 2010. They got bail later.
Eleven other policemen have been charged with offences other than murder.
The charge sheet was filed in the court of special judicial magistrate (CBI), Dehradun, Dec 22, 2009 against the 18 accused. They were booked for murder, kidnapping and tampering with evidence.
The case was shifted to Delhi from Dehradun after the victim’s family voiced fear that Uttarakhand Police could influence the trial in the state.
