Student killed in group clash; 12 booked

Rajpura (Punjab), July 8 (IANS) Twelve people were booked on various charges after a clash between students from Bihar and Himachal Pradesh in this Punjab town left one dead, police said Friday.

“We have booked 10 engineering students and two faculty members under various sections of IPC (Indian Penal Code). We are hopeful of arresting them,” Rajpura’s Superintendent of Police Manmohan Sharma told IANS.

A student from Himachal Pradesh was killed and two were injured after the July 5 clash inside the premises of Surya Engineering College in Rajpura, 40 km from Chandigarh.

The deceased, who stayed in the college hostel, was identified as Himanshu, in his early 20s.

“Students of Bihar and Himachal Pradesh had clashed over a minor dispute. It started from heated arguments and teachers failed to control the situation,” Sharma said.

The students have been booked for rioting and causing accidental death, and the faculty members for being negligent in their duty, he said.

One of the injured, shifted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, is in critical condition, he added.
