Stranded tourists rescued from Andaman island
December 28th, 2011 - 11:50 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 28 (IANS) Hundreds of tourists stranded at the Havelock Islands of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago due to cyclone ‘Thane’ have been rescued, an official said Wednesday.
“In the morning, the weather had improved just enough for the ferry services to resume. By evening, all the tourists from Havelock Islands were brought back to Port Blair,” Satish Mathur, tourism secretary of the archipelago, told IANS.
Around 700 tourists, most of them from West Bengal, were stranded on the island for the past two days after cyclone ‘Thane’ hit the Bay of Bengal.
“However, the tourists had no difficulty as sufficient quantity of food and medicines were available and we were constantly monitoring the situation,” added Mathur.
He said though the cyclone has weakened on the islands, the weather continued to be rough.
The cyclone, located currently at 800 km west-northwest of Port Blair, is likely to intensify in the next 24 hours and cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts Friday morning.
