‘Stop repression against Tibetans in the name of Olympics’

Dharamsala, Aug 3 (IANS) To highlight the plight of people of Tibet in China, the Tibetan Solidarity Committee here has urged world leaders to stop repression against them in the name of providing security for the Olympics. “We urge countries and particularly the global human rights organisations to press the Chinese government to halt all activities of repression against Tibetan people,” an official statement from the solidarity committee said here Sunday.

“The spiritual leader Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration has, since the beginning, supported the Beijing Olympic games as a fitting tribute to China’s ancient civilization and a respect to the Chinese people’s aspirations.

“However, in the name of Olympic security, the government of China has intensified security clampdown amounting to stifling of Tibetan people’s religious freedom and human rights,” the statement added.
