New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) A children’s rights panel has urged the water resources ministry to take steps to prevent children from falling into borewells and dying, Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury said in the Lok Sabha Friday. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has suggested protective measures and proper supervision when borewells are dug. It has also emphasised proper implementation of guidelines for digging borewells and stringent action against the guilty to avoid such incidents in the future, she said.

The lack of safety measures at borewell sites has repeatedly proven hazardous to human lives, the minister said and added with many cases have been reported of children dying after falling into them.
