Stepped-up security at railway stations during Durga puja: official
September 21st, 2009 - 7:58 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Sep 21 (IANS) Security arrangements at all major railway stations across West Bengal would be stepped up during Durga puja festival following an intelligence input from the central home ministry warning of some untoward incident in the state during this period, a senior police officer said Monday.
“We’ve received an intelligence input from the union home ministry. Accordingly, we’ve enhanced security measures at all major railways stations including Howrah and Sealdah - the two major railheads in eastern India,” state Inspector General of Police (Railways) A.K. Sarkar said.
“We’ve informed Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel at all railway stations across the state,” he said, adding that the security forces often receive this kind of information during the festive season and especially before Independence Day on Aug 15 every year.
He said that more security personnel had been pressed into service to carry out surveillance at railways platforms and other adjoining areas, and a special watch would be kept through the advanced monitoring system.
“We’ll also deploy more number of security officers in civil dress to carry out surprise checking with metal detectors in railway station premises,” Sarkar said.
