Steel plant official injured after workers torch vehicle
March 3rd, 2011 - 8:25 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, March 3 (IANS) A senior official of a private steel plant suffered critical burn injuries Thursday when a group of dismissed workers set his vehicle on fire in Orissa’s Bolangir district, police said.
The incident took place near Titilagarh town, about 400 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
District Superintendent of Police A.K. Sarangi said some workers obstructed R.S. Ray, deputy general manager (operation) of the GKW Ltd’s Powmex Steels division, and set his vehicle on fire when he was on his way home for lunch.
“Ray sustained more than 50 percent burn injuries,” the official said.
He was initially taken to a local hospital. Later he was shifted to Veer Surendera Sai Medical College Hospital at Burla in neighbouring Sambalpur district after his condition deteriorated, he said.
The driver of the vehicle managed to escape without any injury. Sarangi said some workers were unhappy with Roy for serving them termination notices Wednesday.
