St Stephen’s row: Court allows Qureshi in governing body
November 16th, 2009 - 9:23 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Monday overturned the order of a single bench that had restrained Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi from participating in the governing body of St Stephen’s College, and allowed him to continue with his work.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar questioned the maintainability of the petition filed by Ajay P Singha, former member of the governing body, on which the single bench had restrained Qureshi from taking part in the activities of the college.
Rev Valson Thampu had approached the court challenging the single bench order but, during the proceedings of the case, Singha’s counsel Upamanyu Hazarika failed to convince the court and he withdrew his petition.
The court, while allowing Singha to withdraw his petition against Qureshi, asked them to file a civil suit for relief.
Singha has alleged the appointment of an IAS officer of Harayana Cadre as member of the governing body was in violation of the rules and constitution of the elite educational institution. He also maintained that he was illegally removed from the apex managing body of the college and replaced by Qureshi.
According to the college constitution, the governing body member ought to have been appointed for three years but Singha alleged he had not completed his term and his services were illegally terminated.
