Sri Lanka to free 1,200 former rebels
September 19th, 2011 - 10:34 pm ICT by IANSColombo, Sep 19 (IANS) Sri Lanka will free 1,200 more rehabilitated former Tamil Tiger guerrillas by September-end, Xinhua reported Monday.
This would take to 17,000 the number of former members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who have gained freedom since the war ended in May 2009, said a senior official.
A. Dissanayake, secretary in the rehabilitation and prison reforms ministry, said all the former fighters had got vocational training to start new lives.
