Sri Lanka recalls Maharoof as cover
May 24th, 2011 - 7:00 pm ICT by IANSLondon, May 24 (IANS) Sri Lanka Tuesday recalled all-rounder Farveez Maharoof to join the squad as a cover for players with “nagging injuries” ahead of their first Test against England starting Thursday at Cardiff.
Maharoof is already in the country, playing county cricket for Lancashire and will join the national squad for a training session at the Swalec Stadium. He also featured in Sri Lanka’s opening tour match against MIddlesex as some of the players were occupied with the Indian Premier League.
“Maharoof has been called up and is already with us. He will be cover for one or two nagging injuries which we will be assessing,” Sri Lanka’s spokesman was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
Fast bowler Dilhara Fernando is thought to be one of those injured players in the side after he was seen in pain while bowling in the team’s second warm-up game against England Lions at Derby.
Maharoof last played a Test in November 2007 but is in touch with the longer format of the game, playing four-day matches for Lancashire. The SrI Lankan, in fact, has been impressive this county season, averaging 65 with the bat and picking up eight wickets at just over 30.
