South African national held with $62,890 at Delhi airport

August 2nd, 2008 - 8:49 pm ICT by IANS -

New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS) A 20-year-old South African national has been arrested at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here on charges of illegally carrying $62,890 in cash, customs officials said Saturday. His arrest came two days after the customs officials had arrested a Nigerian with $39,900 in cash.

According to the officials, Emefiele Evans was rounded up after his movement in the Arrival Hall Friday aroused suspicion. Evans had arrived here from Cape Town in a Qatar Airways flight.

“During the frisk $62,890 was found concealed in the waistband of one of his trousers and shoes. Evans was wearing two trousers and the cash was hidden inside the waistband of his inner trousers,” said a customs official.

“Some dollars were found concealed inside his shoes,” the official added.

On Tuesday a 32-year-old Nigerian national, Monday Morka, was arrested at the IGI airport here with $39,900 in cash. He had come from Johannesburg via Abu Dhabi on an Etihad Airways flight.

The officials said currency worth Rs.1.7 million was stacked between pages of magazines found in his baggage.
