South Africa to honour cricket legend Hansie Cronje
May 19th, 2011 - 11:31 am ICT by IANSJohannesburg, May 19 (IANS) South Africa will posthumously honour former national cricket captain Hansie Cronje, nine years after his death in a plane crash.
Cronje will be posthumously honoured with the Siyabakhumbula Tribute Awards along with nine other South Africans for their meritorious services to the country, the Central Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Cronje was voted the 11th greatest South African in 2004 despite being banned for life from professional cricket for his role in a match-fixing scandal.
Admitting charges levelled against him, Cronje had once said: “The Devil made me do it.”
He died in 2002 in a plane crash while travelling to George from Johannesburg.
The awards ceremony will be held in Johannesburg June 4 and will be presided by Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile.
