New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) The ministry of women and child development has hailed an NGO’s programme for organising home-care villages for homeless children, a statement from SOS Village for children said Friday.

“The ministry in its recent periodic report on the CRC (Conventions on the Rights of Child) has taken notice of the SOS Children’s Village model that provides a family-like environment as an effective model for providing alternative care to homeless children,” the statement said.

The ministry has appreciated the “village model” in the section “family environment and alternative care” enabling children’s healthy development with the support of environment.

With an estimated 18 million street children in India, the ministry report says the state has an obligation to provide shelter to the child till a suitable rehabilitation is found.
