Sonia, Shivraj Patil to visit snow-hit Kashmir

Jammu, Feb 20 (IANS) United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Shivraj Patil will visit Jammu and Kashmir Friday to assess the situation after the heaviest snowfall in decades in the state. According to official sources, Sonia and Patil will visit south Kashmir district of Anantnag in the Kashmir Valley and Bhaderwah and Kishtwar towns in Doda and Kishtwar districts of Jammu division.

The areas were hit by the heaviest snowfall in decades during the first week of this month.

Some areas in Kishtwar district received up to 4.6 metres (15 feet) of snow, and the regular water and power supply is yet to be restored there.

Although the state government assured that the road connectivity, water and power supply would be restored by Feb 10, the areas continue to suffer for lack of water and power supply.

In view of the alarming reports of the peoples’ sufferings in the area, Sonia Gandhi decided to visit these areas, a minister told IANS. Patil, who would make the assessment of the situation, would accompany the Congress president.

“The situation is quite grave and the government is sleeping over the misery of the people,” said Qazi Jalaluddin, opposition National Conference leader from Kishtwar.
