New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS) A day after Sonia Gandhi formed a four-member group to manage party affairs in her absence, the Congress Friday announced two new spokespersons even as the party chief was recuperating in a US hospital after a successful surgery.
Sonia Gandhi is recovering after a successful surgery abroad for an undisclosed ailment, a party leader said Friday as party prayed for her good health.
“The surgery is over… the surgeon has indicated that the operation was successful. Presently she is in ICU (intensive care unit),” Congress media department chairman Janardan Dwivedi told reporters.
Dwivedi said her son and party MP Rahul Gandhi, her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with her.
Gandhi underwent surgery Thursday. Informed sources said she was being treated at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The hospital refused to confirm or deny she was admitted there.
Apart from Rahul Gandhi, the other members of the four-member group to run affairs of the party in her absence are union minister A.K. Antony, Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel and Dwivedi himself.
Gandhi also effected some changes in the work allocation in the party and made some appointments.
Renuka Chowdhury and Rashid Alvi have been appointed as spokespersons.
Congress leaders said that partymen had held prayers in different parts of country for Sonia Gandhi’s speedy recovery. A yagna was held in Lucknow, they said.
Dwivedi had Thursday said Gandhi has “been recently diagnosed with a medical condition that requires surgery”.
However, the party did not say when she left India.
“As this is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment, her family requests that her privacy be respected,” Dwivedi said Friday.
