Sonia Gandhi New York, Aug 8 (IANS) A small group of Sonia Gandhi’s supporters gathered outside the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York believing that the Congress president had undergone surgery there, and wished her speedy recovery.

Some ten supporters belonging to the ‘Indian Congress Party USA’, assembled outside the famed cancer hospital Sunday and sought permission to offer prayers inside the hospital’s chapel, but were not allowed to do so.

There has been speculation in media that Sonia Gandhi has been admitted to the Cancer Center, but the hospital has declined to confirm or give out any information on grounds of patient privacy.

Meanwhile, Indian National Overseas Congress, USA, has wished speedy recovery to Sonia Gandhi while appealing to media and others to respect her privacy during her convalescence.

“We truly admire her for the steady and consistent leadership of the Congress party and the vital role she has been playing for the economic development of India and the upliftment of the poor,” stated INOC USA secretary general, George Abraham.

“Our fervent prayers are with her during the recovery period and looking forward to see her resuming the critical role within the national leadership at the earliest.”

“We also appeal to the media and others to respect her privacy during her convalescence,” the statement added.
