New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) India’s Somdev Devvarman entered the main draw of the ATP BCR Open in Romania after upsetting Volandri Filippo of Italy in three sets in the third round of qualifiers Monday.Somdev, ranked 243 in ATP rankings, posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Voladri, who is 150 ranks above the Indian.
Somdev beat local challengers Florin Mergea and Bogdan Andrii before reaching the third and last qualifying round of the clay court tournament.
The 23-year-old, who will play in India’s Davis Cup match against Romania Sep 19-21, warmed up for the challenge thrashing Andrii 6-0, 6-1 and then posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mergea.
Somdev will be up against some top players of world in the tournament. French Richard Gasquet and Simon Giles, who are ranked 12 and 16 in ATP rankings, are the top two seeds in the tournament. Spanish Nicolas Almagro, ranked 18, is seeded third.
Somdev had been in red-hot form this season and won his maiden Challenger title in Lexington in July. In August, Somdev reached the quarterfinals of ATP Challenger Vancouver Open and Legg Mason Tennis Classic.
Before that the reigning NCAA champion won three consecutive titles — the $10,000 Buffalo Bills tournament in Rochester, Futures event in Pittsburgh and New York’s Kennedy Funding Invitational — that sent his rankings soaring high.
