Snowfall closes Jammu-Srinagar highwayFebruary 6th, 2009 - 2:07 pm ICT by IANS
Srinagar, Feb 6 (IANS) Heavy snowfall in the Pir Panjal mountain range Friday closed the strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway.“Heavy snowfall since last evening caused slippery conditions in the Jawahar Tunnel area following which the highway was closed for vehicular traffic,” an official of the traffic department said here.
It has been intermittently snowing since last evening in most parts of the Valley uprooting electric poles and blocking roads.
Authorities in the summer capital Srinagar moved out snow clearing machines since 4 a.m. and made all roads fully functional here.
“Snow clearance operations are also going on in other parts of the Valley and traffic has been restored between Srinagar and other district headquarters,” a senior government official said.
Electric supply across the Valley, however, remained disrupted with most locals complaining that the supply of electricity has become highly erratic and undependable.
“We have moved out the staff to restore power supply in different parts of the city and also outside,” said an official of the local electric department.
The Meteorological department said there would be improvement in the weather conditions by Saturday.
“The Western disturbance over the Valley is likely to weaken by tomorrow (Saturday),” the local weather office said.
“There are enough stocks of essential supplies including petrol, diesel, kerosene, cooking gas and foodstuffs. The administration is fully geared to deal with any eventuality,” Kashmir divisional commissioner Masuad Samoon said.
