Snake-charmers protest with snakes outside Dikshit residence
April 25th, 2011 - 5:01 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 25 (IANS) Pipe-playing snake charmers with their dancing snakes staged a unique protest outside Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s residence Monday demanding the inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.
The protest was unique in its style as the snake charmers started to play their “beens” (pipes) with some of them taking the reptiles out of the cane baskets and making them dance.
After some time Dikshit came out and met a few of the agitators and promised to look into their demand.
“We have asked for reservation under the ST category and have demanded issuance of licence to all our community members. The chief minister has agreed to look into the issue,” a member of Delhi Sapera Samaj told reporters.
“The government must include us in the ST category so that we get benefits of reservation as we are from the adivasi community,” a snake charmer said.
The snake charmers also said that if the government does not fulfil their demand they will step up their agitation.
