Smriti Irani nominated for Rajya Sabha from Gujarat

New Delhi, July 9 (IANS) Indian television’s popular “bahu” Smriti Irani and Dilip Pandya have been nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat, party sources said Saturday.
Smriti Irani, who is at present the president of the party’s women’s wing, was earlier defeated in the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk constituency by Kapil Sibal of the Congress.
Pandya, 65, an old Jan Sangh activist, is a BJP leader from north Gujarat’s Siddhpur town. He is also a former president of Siddhpur municipality.
The rajya Sabha tenures of the BJP’s Pravin Naik and Surendra Motilal Patel and the Congress’s Ahmed Patel are ending Aug 18. The Rajya Sabha elections for three seats from Gujarat are to be held July 22.
The Congress has already announced nominating Ahmed Patel for the seat again.
