Slain Mumbai cop’s wife to get transparency law award
December 21st, 2010 - 10:50 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS) Vinita Kamte, wife of slain Mumbai Police officer Ashok Kamte and who exposed the chaos in the police control room during the 2008 terror attack, has been selected for an award for using the transparency law to make an impact.Her husband, an Indian Police Service officer, fell to terrorists’ bullets.
She is one of the five people selected for this year’s Best Right To Information (RTI) Citizen award by the Public Cause Research Foundation set up by transparency law activist Arvind Kejriwal.
The five awardees were shortlisted from 726 applications received by the jury. The awards ceremony will be held next month.
The jury included Infosys chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy, former chief justice of India J.S. Verma, former chief election commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh and mediaperson Madhu Trehan.
The other winners of the Best RTI Citizen award are Manoj Kumar Karwasra and Ramesh Kumar Verma from Haryana, Rajan Savlo Ghate from Goa and Athar Shamsi from Uttar Pradesh.
The foundation will also honour families of 10 RTI activists who were killed this year.
The Best RTI Journalist award will go to Saikat Dutta of Outlook. He exposed a Rs.2,500 crore-scam in rice export.
The Best Public Information Officer award will be given to Pradeep Kumar from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh.
