Slain man’s family approaches court for higher compensation
October 14th, 2011 - 6:09 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Friday issued notice to the central and Delhi governments and the Delhi Police chief on the plea of the family of a young man who helped police chase a rogue constable but was shot at and died later. The parents of 24-year-old Harinder Singh alias Sunny approached the court seeking direction to the governments for award of appropriate compensation to the family.
A resident of Kishanganj, Sunny had helped the police catch Ajay Kumar Tomar, a head constable who had shot dead businessman, Amarjeet Singh Chadha, and was trying to flee with the loot near Old Delhi Railway Station Sep 24.
However, while fleeing Tomar shot Sunny in the neck. The young man was admitted to St Stephen’s Hospital but died on Sep 26.
Taking note of the petition filed by Sunny’s family seeking compensation of Rs.50 lakh and one government service for any of the family members, Justice Mukta Gupta issued notice to the central government, Delhi government and Delhi Police commissioner seeking their response within four weeks.
Listing the matter for Dec 15, Justice Gupta said: “The respondents shall file counter affidavit within four weeks’ time and thereafter the petitioner will file their rejoinder within two weeks from that day.”
“He (Sunny) died on Sep 26, after all his vital organs failed,” said the petition.
Meanwhile, police announced a reward of Rs.50,000 for his bravery.
Tomar, posted with the 7th battalion of Delhi Armed Police, has been sacked.
Tomar had waylaid Chadha, 60, and asked him to hand over his valuables. When Chadha resisted, the policeman shot him in the stomach and tried to escape on foot.
A head constable on patrol duty ran after Tomar. Harider Singh offered a ride to the policeman on his motorcycle to chase Tomar.
Tomar shot Sunny and jumped from a bridge. He fractured his legs in the fall and was caught.
