Dharamsala, May 27 (IANS) Six Tibetan women will walk the ramp next month in this Himachal Pradesh town that has been home to thousands of exiles, an event organiser said here Friday.

“Six women will compete for the 10th edition of the Miss Tibet pageant to be held June 3-5 at McLeodganj (in upper Dharamsala),” pageant’s director-producer Lobsang Wangyal told IANS.

The ninth edition of the pageant saw four girls competing and 23-year-old Tenzin Norzom winning the title.

Wangyal said this year the event has received substantial international attention to the Tibetan cause in general and Tibetan women in particular.

This year’s participants are Tenzin Khecheo from the US, Chemi Lhazom from Delhi, Dolma Tsering from Bangalore, Ngodup Dolma from Australia, Tenzin Sangmo from Dharamsala and Tenzin Yangkyi from Switzerland.

They would go through three rounds of contest that includes a swimwear round June 3, talent round June 4 and finale night June 5.

Only 32 girls have competed for the crown since it was first started in 2002.

Interestingly, only one contestants turned out twice in 2003 and 2005 pageants and eventually got titles unopposed.

Many exiles opposed the pageant, saying it was “un-Tibetan”.

Even the Tibetan government-in-exile here has condemned the pageant, saying it is not part of their tradition.
