Six arrested in CWG road lighting scam
June 10th, 2011 - 11:16 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 10 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested six people in connection with alleged irregularities in the tendering process for upgrading Delhi’s street lighting ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, a CBI official said Friday. Former CWG organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi and half-a-dozen other officials are already in jail in connection with other scams relating to the Games.
The contract was awarded for improving the lighting system of the city’s roads in the areas falling under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
The CBI has arrested three MCD officials — O.P. Mahala, executive engineer; D.K. Sugan, superintending engineer; and Gurucharan Singh, a clerk, in the tendering process. Two directors of private firm Sweka Engineering Works — T.P. Singh and J.P. Singh — and Mehul Karnik, top employee of Philips India, have also been arrested, the official said.
“They were produced before the special CBI judge in Tis Hazari court today (Friday) and sent to four day police custody,” said CBI Spokesperson Dharini Mishra.
The MCD had in 2008 floated a tender for upgrading the street lighting. A stretch of 101.56 km was covered by the contract that was awarded to Sweka Engineering for Rs.34.53 crore.
The CBI found that the MCD officials earned kickbacks from the the private firm for awarding the contract. The investigative agency had filed an FIR in the case June 16, 2010.
