Greater Noida, March 26 (IANS) Agitating farmers went on a rampage in Greater Noida Saturday after six protesters were injured in a clash with police. While the farmers alleged that the police attacked them, police said the farmers indulged in violence and were holding two officials hostage.

According to local residents, a group of farmers were protesting against the acquisition of their agricultural lands on Dankore-Jewar highway near Mirzapur village in the afternoon when a contingent of the state police’s Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) arrived and cane-charged them.

“They beat us up brutally as if we had no right to say anything on our own land. They did not spare even the women and children and thrashed them too,” said Suresh, a local farmer.

However, Superintendent of Police (Greater Noida) Rakesh Kumar Jolly said it was the farmers who attacked the police team.

“A police party was going along that way when the farmers attacked it. In retaliation, the police had to fire tear gas shells and rubber bullets. The farmers had also kidnapped A.K. Verma, deputy director of handicapped welfare department and Virendra Kumar, deputy director of agriculture department. We have detained twelve of their men.”

Provoked by this, the enraged locals torched three government vehicles and two dumper trucks. The PAC then reached Bhatta Parsol village in the evening where another protest was being carried out by the farmers and was deployed in the streets.
