Sibal assures help to expand education in Delhi
July 7th, 2010 - 8:31 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 7 (IANS) Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal Wednesday promised all help to the Delhi government in expanding higher, technical and vocational education in the capital.
In a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Sibal expressed concern over the shortage of teachers in the city, a government official said.
But the city’s initiatives to make elementary education more purposeful was appreciated by the minister, the official added.
“The HRD ministry also appreciated computerisation in the state’s education department, which has been facilitating online teachers’ attendance and a separate ID for every child,” the official added.
The minister promised that Rs.9 crore would be provided to the state government to strengthen the State Council Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and District Institute of Education Training (DIET).
While referring to problems in admissions in Delhi colleges, Sibal said the state government was free to set up its own Open University through a legislation.
The official quoted Sibal as saying that the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will be approached to initiate a large vocational education training in Delhi.
Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh was also present in the meeting.
