Short power outage causes panic at PRDSeptember 4th, 2008 - 2:39 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
A power outage occurred at the Public Relations Department headquarters earlier today (September 4).
At 9:40 AM today, a power outage lasting approximately 20 minutes occurred at the Public Relations Department compound and the command post of the Office of the Permanent Secretary, The Prime Minister’s Office. The incident caused some panic among civil servants at both government locations, with officials suspecting sabotage by state enterprise labor unions, who have vowed to cut water and electricity to government buildings if the People’s Alliance for Democracy’s demands are not met.
The Public Relations Department was able to continue operations despite the power outage due to emergency generators. Normal electrical power returned at 10:00 AM prompting officials to believe that the incident was a normal electrical disturbance. Civil servants remain concerned, however, that their water and electricty may be sabotaged in the future.
Representatives of labor unions affirm that they will only shut down water and electricity supplies as a last resort to force the Prime Minister to resign.
