Shiv Sena mum, Samajwadi Party welcomes Raj Thackeray’s arrestOctober 21st, 2008 - 3:11 pm ICT by IANS
Mumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) The Samajwadi Party Tuesday welcomed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s arrest and called for his trial under the Maharashtra Prevention of Disruptive Activities Act (MPDA), while the Shiva Sena chose to keep mum on the issue.Thackeray, whose MNS workers Sunday attacked non Maharashtrians appearing for the railway board examination, was arrested from Ratnagiri, about 250 km from here early Tuesday. He was brought to Mumbai under tight security to be produced at the Bandra court.
When contacted for the Shiv Sena’s stand on Thackeray’s arrest, party leader Subhash Desai said: “I have no reaction to this issue.”
On Monday, Shiv Sena executive president Udhav Thackeray had joined his cousin’s demand for reservation for Maharashtrians during railway recruitment in the state.
In a statement in the party mouthpiece Saamna, he had said that by recruiting people belonging to the states where vacancies arise, the railways could ensure that injustice is not done to unemployed youth in different states.
Samajwadi Party state president Abu Asim Azmi welcomed the MNS chief’s arrest and urged the Maharashtra government to take strict action against him.
“Our demand is that Raj should be tried at least under the Maharashtra Prevention of Disruptive Activities Act (MPDA) or, if necessary, even under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Otherwise the arrest will be nothing but an eyewash,” Azmi told IANS.
He also demanded that the state government compensate the people whose properties or vehicles were damaged by MNS activists who went on the rampage after Thackeray’s arrest.
