Shelters handed over to Ladakh cloudburst survivors

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) The government has handed over 16 prefabricated shelters, built with aid from the prime minister’s relief fund, to be used for educational institutions in Ladakh that was devastated in August by a cloudburst and flashfloods.The huts were handed over Thursday by Vice Chairman of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Shashidhar Reddy to chief of the Ladakh autonomous council Rigzin Spalbar. They will be utilized for community and educational institutions, a home ministry official said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sanctioned an amount of Rs.5 crore for the relief of flood affected families for the construction of prefabricated shelters. The NDMA undertook the work of the community shelters at different locations on sites identified by the state government.
The NDMA official who was in Leh assured the affected families of all necessary help in raising community awareness and capacity building.
