Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu), May 2 (IANS) The Kanchi Shankara Math has no official link to the proposed Shankara television channel and the pontiffs would not comment on any debatable issue, sources at the monastery told IANS. Highly placed sources in the Math, situated 70 km west of capital Chennai, were reacting Friday to reports indicating that the channel, a manifestation of the seers’ angst over the Ram Setu issue, would be online within the next fortnight.

It is purely a private, personal endeavour by Shiva Subramanian, a devotee of the monastery, and is at a conceptual stage, the sources said.

“Subramanian, a retired top official from union handlooms ministry, who is slated to coordinate the functioning of the channel, has only begun moving the relevant papers in the central government’s departments. Therefore, no one can say when the channel will start functioning. Right now, we only know that it is at the conceptual stage,” a Math functionary said.

While the channel’s telecasts may feature speeches of the pontiffs every day, all debatable issues would be avoided, the sources said.

“Among other programmes aimed at educating the world about the scientific nature of Hindu beliefs, the pontiffs’ purely religious discourses may be shown on the channel, since its promoters are devotees of the monastery. Their Holiness, however, have no comments whatsoever to offer on any contemporaneous issue,” a functionary said.
