Chandigarh, Feb 20 (IANS) A 50-year-old man who had been married six times previously landed in police custody after the seventh occasion on the complaint of his latest bride, the police said here Friday.
“We got a complaint Thursday from a woman who is a government employee here that her newly-wedded husband Om Prakash Sharma married her unlawfully and did not tell her about his past six marriages. Acting on the complaint we have arrested her husband,” Ram Gopal, station house officer, Sector-19 told IANS Friday.
“We have referred this case to the woman’s cell for further investigation and for appropriate action. However, we have also told the complainant to approach the women’s cell with full evidence against her husband as till now she has just made the allegations and has not given any proof to support her complaint,” Gopal said.
According to Neha (name changed), she responded to a matrimonial advertisement published in a newspaper and approached Om Prakash Sharma in January. Sharma told her that his first wife had died several years ago and he was staying alone in the city.
Sharma married her Tuesday but vanished a day after the marriage. When Neha called on his mobile phone, some woman answered and told her that she was Sharma’s wife and that he was staying with her in Chandigarh’s Sector 46. She also told Neha that Sharma also had another wife in Delhi and had two children from her.
Neha told the police that she had spent over Rs.150,000 on the marriage and gifted a gold ring and chain to Sharma while he had gifted her artificial jewellery.
“Sharma who is fluent in English is a resident of Ajmer in Rajasthan. He was suspended from the post of a lecturer in the law department at Ajmer University in Rajasthan following a complaint lodged by a female colleague there,” said a police officer.
