Seventeen foetuses found in Bihar, probe ordered (Lead)
April 4th, 2011 - 6:21 pm ICT by IANSPatna, April 4 (IANS) Sixteen foetuses, mostly female, were found in plastic jars in Bihar’s Kishanganj district while another was recovered near a garbage heap in Muzaffarpur town, police said Monday. The state government has ordered a probe into the shocking find.
The foetuses were recovered near a private nursing home in Kishanganj, about 400 km from here, Sunday after some locals informed the police.
The state government has asked the Kishanganj district administration to inquire into the case.
“The administration has begun a probe into the matter,” a district official said.
Kishanganj Superintendent of Police R.K. Mishra said that it appeared that the foetuses were four to six months old. “All foetuses were kept in plastic jars with chemical water,” he said, adding that he suspected they were to be supplied outside.
“It shocked us and we have taken it seriously to expose the people behind the abortion racket,” Mishra told IANS by telephone.
Another foetus was found near a garbage heap in Muzaffarpur town, about 70 km from here.
Patna-based woman activist Kanchal Bala said the incidents exposed how rampant the practice of killing unborn girl child was in Bihar.
“It is high time the state government initiates strict action against the guilty people,” she said.
According to latest census results, Bihar’s population is over 10 crore, of which 4,96,19,290 are females.
