Seven killed in US house fireAugust 17th, 2008 - 12:48 pm ICT by IANS
Washington, Aug 17 (DPA) Seven people, including five children, were killed as a fire broke out in a house in southern US, media reports Sunday said. Firefighters said those who were charred to death Saturday in Memphis, Tennessee state, included a 38-year-old woman, an 18-year-old male, three girls aged below nine and two boys below five.
Three children - boys aged 11 and 16, and a 17-year-old girl - suffered second-degree burns, the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper reported.
It took 30 fire personnel about 20 minutes to get the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to other houses in the low-income neighbourhood of Orange Mound.
The cause of the fire was still to be determined.
“It’s a tragic situation for the community and the city,” Memphis Fire Department spokesmen Lieutenant Keith Staples was quoted as saying.
