Seven killed as rains lash Punjab
August 13th, 2011 - 8:29 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 13 (IANS) At least seven people were killed in different parts of Punjab as heavy rains lashed various parts of the state since Friday, officials said here Saturday.
Two people were killed and five others were injured when three houses collapsed in Kila Mohalla area of the industrial city of Ludhiana, 110 km from Chandigarh, late Friday night, police said.
“Heavy rainfall hampered rescue and relief operations in the congested colony,” a local police officer told IANS by phone.
In Phillaur town, 20 km from Ludhiana, two police personnel were killed when a wall of the Punjab Police Academy collapsed Saturday in heavy rainfall.
In Ganna village of Phillaur sub-division, three people, including a woman and two children, were killed when their house collapsed after heavy rain.
Police officials here said there were reports that at least 3-4 more people have died in various parts of Punjab due to electrocution and incidents of wall collapse.
