Set up cell to curb fake driving licences: court tells police
December 10th, 2009 - 11:44 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Thursday suggested that the police constitute a special cell for maintaining records of fake driving licences so that rising cases of accidents can be curbed.
Justice J.R. Midha also directed insurance companies to forward to police cases of fake driving licences they come across so that the special cell can update its record.
“All the records will be in the form of e-mail,” the judge suggested.
The judge asked the police, transport department and insurance companies to hold a meeting and submit a report by Dec 16, the next date of hearing.
“The victims suffer because the insurance companies deny the liability on the ground of fake licence. However, no action is taken by any authority against persons who hold or issue fake licences,” the court ruled.
The court was told by the insurance companies that the police never make any serious effort to ascertain the genuineness of a license and in most cases it is revealed only after an accident when it is verified by the investigator appointed by insurance companies.
