Sensex soars in afternoon trade (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, May 31 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Tuesday built on its morning gains and was ruling about 226 points higher in afternoon trade. Realty, FMCG and banking scrips led the gainers’ pack.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,266.61 points, was ruling at 18,459.01 points, up 226.95 points or 1.24 percent from its previous close at 18,232.06 points.

The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading higher at 5,547.75 points, up 1.36 percent.

Broader markets too were ruling in the green with the BSE midcap index ruling 1.3 percent up and the BSE smallcap index up 0.77 percent.

Realty, FMCG and banking stocks were among major gainers at this time. All 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the green.

The market breadth was positive with 1,674 stocks advancing, 946 on the decline and 111 unchanged.

Among gainers on the Sensex were Jindal Steel, ITC, DLF and HDFC Bank. There were only two losers on the benchmark index at this time: Cipla and M&M.;

Asian markets rallied Tuesday.

The Nikkei of the Japanese stock exchange closed 1.99 percent up at 9,693.73 points, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was ruling 1.61 percent up at 23,558.64 points.

The Shanghai Composite index of the Chinese markets too ended higher at 2,743.47 points, up 1.37 percent.

European markets too were ruling higher in the opening session.
